Gouache on gray paper

This is a drawing based on my experience of insomnia. Insomnia has been an old friend of mine for years now but I haven't become any better at dealing with it.

The first time I failed to sleep for the entire night was in my first year of high school: I lied on my bed and listened to my roommate’s regular breathing. I heard it began to rain outside, and I heard that the rain stopped. Then I heard my 6:30 am alarm went off.

Time and space seem to be distorted. The night is stretched into a thin layer like spreading too little jam on a piece of toast that's too big.
